JESSIE G. SHOFFNER Funeral services for Mrs. Jes site G. Shoffner were conducted at New Goshen Methodist Church, Greensboro, N. C., on Sunday, June 16, at 3:30 p. m. The Reverend W. R. Royster officiated. Mrs. Shoffner, daugh ter of the late George and Julie Griffin, was born Jan. 19, 1887 in West Virginia. She departed this life June 12, 1968 at the Carolina Nursing Center at the age of 81 years. She was a life time resident of Greensboro, N. C. and a faithful and loyal member of the New Goshen Methodist Church for many years. She leaves to mourn: her hus band, Mr. Frank Shoffner of the home; five daughters, Mrs. Ma ne Goins of Philadelphia, Pa Mrs. Jalander Brown, Mrs. Bea trice Branch, Mrs. Margaret Gladney, all of Greensboro, anc Mrs. Gladvs Daniels of Media Pa.; four sons. GETS NEARLY $400,090 FOR TEACHING RESEARCH PLANS A federal grant of $386,572 has been awarded to A&T State Uni versity to assist in upgrading the university's total program. Dr. L. C. Dowdy, president of A&T said that included in the grant is $236 000 to continue a special, curriculum development nro-ra'n for freshman students. The additional money w'll en able A&T to continue its coop erative arrangement with the University of Wisconsin. The larger university will continue to provide visiting lecturers, consultants, and other services to A&T. MATTHEWS METHODIST CHURCH The annual Vacation Bible School was held at the St. Mat thew Methodist Church located on Ashe and Lee Streets, for two weeks. The classes began each day at 6:30 p.m. and ended at $:30 p.m. The school opened Mohday, June 10 and had Its closing exercises Friday eve ning, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. The membership during this period was approximately 80 students. Workers with the school this year were as follows: Superin tendent of Sunday School, Mr. Cooley Hooker; Director of Va cation Bible School, Mrs. G. A Johnson; Supervisor, Mr. C. E. Dean. Teachers were; Mrs. C. E Dean, Mrs. D. G. Pearson, Mrs Gloria Guy, and Mrs. Dobb. kindergarten and nursery; Mrs. Nettye White, Mrs. Sarah Mc Leod, and Mrs. Shirley Beatha. class I and II; Miss Patricia Johnson and Miss Linda John son, class III and IV; Mrs. Clar ence Yourse and Mrs. Audrey Brown, class V and VI; Mrs. Marie Gibbs and Mr. Bruce White, junior high; Mr. Cooley Hooker and Mr. Raymond Brown, senior high youths. Other workers included: sec retary, Mrs. Wilphria C. Thomp son; refreshments, Mrs. Cooley Hooker and Mrs. Ellen Phifer; music, Miss Lola Campbell and Mrs. C. B. Shipp. Also helping were Mrs. Cleo H. Joseph Beatha This year the time of the event was switched from morn ing to evening in order that more teachers might be avail able to work with the young sters and that more of the church's own Sunday School at tendance might come out. selected for the program will be exposed to new methods ol teaching the traditional f esh man subjects. A special faculty has been selected to partirinate in the program and full scholar ships will be granted to partici pating students. Dr. Dowdy said the new funds will be a big help in the fnci'lty improvement project. At least sxteen facultv members vjll be nnrsuint additional graduate de grees under the program next school term. SUMMFB LFCTITUE SERIES i OUTLINED AT AS T STATE Six nationally-known educa tors will appear on the annual summer school lecture series at A&T State University. Concerts by the U. S. Navy Band, pianist Roger Harris and baritone Ray mond Frith will complete the cultural programs. The initial lecture was given at A&T by Dr. John R. Ginthei on June 20. The next presenta tion will be on June 27 by Dr. Carroll V, Newsom, vice presi dent for education for the Radio Corporation of America. Other speakers will be Dr. William Gardner, clinical psy chologist with the University of Wisconsin, July 2; Dr. Neil P. Atkins, associate secretary ol the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, July 10; Dr. O. Hobart Mowrer, research psychologist with the Tfniversitv of Illinois, July 25; and Dr. Donald H. Smith, direc tor of the Center for Inner City Studies at Northeastern Illinois State College, Aug. 1. The famed U. S. Navy Band will appear in Harrison Audito rium on July 1. The Roger Har ris piano concert is scheduled July 8 and Frith will give a concert on July 23. NEGRO SCHOLARS, ARTISTS, AT NCC UNDER FEDERAL GRANTS Durham, N. C. ? North Caro lina College will bring promi nent Negro scholars to the Dur ham campus this summer under Title III, Higher Education Act, grants given by the United States government. Dr. Marcus H. Boulware, pro fessor at Tennessee A&I Uni versity, is conducting a Speech and Hearing Institute at the present time. Dr. Boulware is the author of a widely distrib uted newspaper column on pop ular speech. Dr. Richard Barksdale of At lanta University, authority on the new wave of Black Poets, will be a visitor to the campus under the Title in Visiting Scholars program later this summer. A Fine Arts Festival will bring the Don Byrd jazz group to the campus.
